Member of Technical Staff, India
About this job
Human Archive, a research lab backed by Y Combinator founded by Stanford and UC Berkeley researchers, is on a mission to model human embodied intelligence by building custom hardware, deploying them globally, and publishing research. As a Member of Technical Staff in India, you will build and run the software platform behind a large-scale data collection and annotation operation. This includes designing schemas, building APIs, developing internal web apps and dashboards, creating data ingestion integrations, and deploying systems on AWS. A normal day involves working directly with the local operations team to solve real-world constraints, building tooling for human review workflows, ensuring strict data integrity, and shipping robust end-to-end features using Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and React. You will own meaningful systems entirely from day one in a lean, fast-paced, and deeply technical environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and build end-to-end services using Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and React.
- Develop internal web apps and dashboards to track deployments, metrics, and KPIs.
- Manage data models requiring high correctness, idempotent writes, and explicit table grain.
- Build tooling for human-in-the-loop review and annotation workflows.
- Create and maintain integration surfaces for automated machine clients over authenticated endpoints.
- Deploy, operate, and troubleshoot applications and services across AWS infrastructure layers.
- Perform performance tuning tasks including query profiling, indexing, caching, and database optimization.
- Collaborate directly with the operations team to align software solutions with real-world workflow constraints.
Requirements
- Strong production experience in Python with FastAPI or a comparable framework.
- Real PostgreSQL depth covering schema design, migrations, indexing, and query performance.
- Front-end proficiency in React and TypeScript to independently ship usable internal tools.
- Solid API design judgment including versioning, idempotency, and batch endpoints.
- Strong data-integrity instincts regarding state derivation, data duplication, and identifiers.
- Ability to debug across application, database, network, and cloud service boundaries.
- Fluent use of AI coding tools like Claude, Claude Code, or equivalent while owning the final codebase.
- Comfort with high ambiguity, autonomous ownership, and clear technical writing.
Good to have
- Experience serving or integrating model inference in a production path.
- Background in annotation, labelling, or human-in-the-loop review systems.
- Experience with clients tolerating unreliable connectivity and reconciling cleanly.
- Familiarity with media or sensor data at scale, video pipelines, or large binary object storage.
- Experience with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, or exposing internal data to language models.
Who should apply
This role suits a strong, independent generalist software engineer who thrives in ambiguity and takes complete ownership of end-to-end systems. If you enjoy working closely with operations teams, value strict data correctness, and are comfortable moving fast with modern AI tools while writing robust Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and React code, you will fit right in. The posting does not mention fresher eligibility, so candidates with relevant technical depth are encouraged to apply based on the stated production requirements.
Frequently asked questions
What is the primary mission of humanarchive?
Human Archive is a research lab focused on modeling human embodied intelligence, recovering human physical intelligence as a learned model, and building the infrastructure to accelerate the transition of automated physical labor.
What core technologies are used by humanarchive for this role?
For the Member of Technical Staff position, humanarchive primarily uses Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and React, deployed and operated on AWS.
Will I need to work with other teams at humanarchive?
Yes, you will work directly with the operations team down the hall, whose workflow constraints serve as the core requirements for the internal systems you build.
Are AI tools used in the daily workflow at humanarchive?
Yes, fluent use of AI tools like Claude, Claude Code, or Cowork is a normal part of how engineering is done here, provided you review and fully own the code that lands.
