Starburst is hiring an AI Platform Engineer for its team in India. Starburst provides enterprise intelligence at scale, giving organizations secure and governed access to all their data using open standards like Trino and Apache Iceberg. The AI team builds the AI layer for Starburst products, including AIDA, creating agents that allow users to ask questions in natural language and receive grounded answers from their actual data. As the first dedicated platform engineering hire on this team, you will act as a force multiplier by building shared development primitives, clean abstractions across the Python and JVM boundary, and SDKs that help other product teams ship faster. A normal day involves designing agent development SDKs, creating developer tooling, building shared infrastructure like model gateways and observability pipelines, and owning overall platform health, performance, and reliability.
Responsibilities
- Design and build an agent development SDK covering tool registration, context management, and prompt management
- Build the language bridge between Python and JVM with type safety and observability
- Create developer tooling including local environments, debugging tools, and CI integration
- Define and maintain API contracts between the AI layer and the Starburst platform
- Build shared infrastructure such as model gateways and observability pipelines
- Develop unified, product-agnostic components used across multiple products
- Own platform health including performance, reliability, and developer ergonomics
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with at least 2 years in platform, infrastructure, or developer tooling
- Proficiency in both Python and JVM languages like Java or Kotlin
- Experience designing APIs and SDKs consumed by other engineering teams
- Strong distributed systems fundamentals including RPC, serialization, and observability
- Experience with containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud infrastructure such as AWS
- Track record of building tools that improve other engineers' velocity
- Ability to travel up to 25% for onboarding, offsites, and engagements
Good to have
- Experience with LLM integration patterns like model APIs and token management
- Experience with cross-language interop such as gRPC and language bridges
- Open-source contributions to developer tooling or infrastructure projects
- Familiarity with A/B testing frameworks and experiment infrastructure
- Java agent framework experience such as LangChain4j
