Welocalize is looking for an SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) to focus on middleware-layer testing for their global AI data initiatives. The company builds ethical data to train advanced AI systems through a large network of contributors. In this role, you will bring technical rigor to network interactions, focusing primarily on API and network analysis rather than conventional UI automation. Your normal day will involve observing and reconstructing network interactions generated by onboarding user interfaces, including request and response structures, schemas, headers, identifiers, and client-injected parameters. You will produce sanitized network evidence and build controlled tracer replay scripts to support downstream backend validation. This freelance opportunity offers a chance to engage in specialized protocol-level inspection and traffic analysis.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain automated API test suites for gRPC-Web, Proto3, HTTP/2, and JSON-RPC/REST services.
- Export sanitized HAR and network evidence while maintaining traceability between user interface actions and network requests.
- Inspect and intercept network traffic using proxy tools like Mitmproxy, Charles Proxy, and browser DevTools.
- Develop API automation scripts in Python, Postman, and cURL for functional and regression testing.
- Analyze protocol-level behavior to spot defects in serialization, encoding, and transport layers.
- Examine payload structures, routing identifiers, and authentication tokens under valid and malformed conditions.
- Collaborate with backend teams to establish testable contracts and document technical findings.
Requirements
- 3 to 5+ years of hands-on expertise with gRPC-Web, Proto3, HTTP/2, and JSON-RPC/REST protocols.
- Proficiency with traffic inspection and proxy tools such as Mitmproxy, Charles Proxy, and browser DevTools.
- Strong scripting abilities in Python, along with practical experience using Postman and cURL.
- Experience building and maintaining automated test suites specifically for middleware or API-layer services.
- Solid understanding of API request structures, system parameters, and network-level debugging skills.
- Familiarity with software engineering practices including version control, code review, and continuous integration.

- Experience analyzing browser-generated network traffic and reconstructing API behavior.
- Familiarity with HAR analysis, API schema reconstruction, or controlled API replay.
