OR Scientist
About this job
As an OR Scientist at lyric, you will join a specialized team focused on transforming complex supply chain challenges into effective optimization models and production-ready software. Lyric provides an enterprise AI platform designed for global supply chains, helping Fortune 500 organizations manage inventory, routing, network design, and capacity planning through advanced algorithms. In this role, your normal day will involve translating messy supply chain problems into mathematical models like LP/MIP, network flows, or heuristics. You will write clean Python code using solvers, diagnose and refine slow optimization models, collaborate with senior scientists, and leverage AI/LLM tooling to accelerate development. You will also connect your algorithmic solutions directly to real-world business impacts.
Responsibilities
- Formulate complex supply chain challenges into optimization, heuristic, or simulation models.
- Diagnose and improve slow or infeasible optimization models using valid inequalities, decomposition, or heuristics.
- Write clean, tested, production-grade Python code utilizing solvers and modeling layers.
- Utilize AI/LLM and agentic tooling critically as both a build accelerator and an algorithmic pipeline component.
- Connect optimization models directly to operational business decisions and service levels.
- Communicate formulations, trade-offs, and results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience formulating and solving real optimization problems beyond coursework.
- Professional software engineering practice in Python including version control, testing, and code review.
- Exposure to at least one commercial or open-source solver via a modeling layer.
- Critical and hands-on posture toward AI/LLM coding tools.
- Ability to own well-scoped pieces of work under the guidance of senior scientists.
Good to have
- Prior exposure to supply chain or comparable operational-decision domains.
- Track record of work running at real scale with meaningful data volumes.
- Experience shipping code that stayed in production with ongoing monitoring.
- Evidence of self-initiated projects or improvements driven end-to-end.
- Background at a company or lab doing optimization, supply chain, or algorithmic decisioning.
Who should apply
This role suits early-career candidates and entry-level professionals with hands-on experience in optimization modeling and Python programming. If you have practical background in operations research, supply chain algorithms, or applied mathematics and want to grow under senior leadership in an enterprise AI environment, this position is a great fit. While the posting specifies it is an entry/early-career IC role, it requires practical experience beyond just academic coursework.
