Astronomer is looking for a Senior Software Engineer in Python to join their open-source engineering team based in Hyderabad. Astronomer is the company behind Astro, a unified DataOps platform powered by Apache Airflow that helps data teams build reliable data products and power AI applications. In this role, you will be part of the team shaping Apache Airflow, the industry standard for data orchestration. A normal day in this position involves designing and implementing new Airflow features, improving system performance and resiliency, enhancing developer experience, writing unit tests, and collaborating with team members. You will also have the opportunity to engage with the global Apache Airflow open-source community, troubleshoot complex customer issues, and contribute directly to the growth and success of the platform.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement new Airflow features and components.
• Improve the performance and resiliency of Airflow.
• Iterate and improve upon Airflow's developer experience.
• Enhance code quality, increase test coverage, and reduce test runtime.
• Participate in the Airflow community through Slack, mailing lists, and GitHub.
• Collaborate closely with team members to deliver high-quality results.
• Liaise with customers to troubleshoot issues and provide solutions.
• Promote new Airflow features at conferences and events.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Python developer with 5+ years of experience.
• Demonstrated ability to think creatively and explore new ideas.
• Experience in troubleshooting complex issues.
• Strong knowledge of building scalable and distributed systems.
• Proactive approach to learning and staying updated with industry trends.
• Proficiency in writing unit tests and appreciation for automated testing.
• Strong cooperative skills including active listening and information sharing.
• Effective communication skills across multiple mediums like GitHub, Slack, and Zoom.

Good to have

• Experience with Apache Airflow in production environments.
• Data Engineering experience.
• Prior contributions to Open Source projects.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes and Docker.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and agentic tooling like Claude Code.
