Mechanisation Engineer
About this job
FinAgra is building a new model for commercial agriculture in emerging markets by combining financing, agronomy, technology, and farm operations to turn underperforming farmland into productive farming businesses. As a Mechanisation Engineer for the AgOps team, you will plan and run machinery deployment end to end across project sites in horticulture and agri crops. Your work will span the entire crop calendar, from land preparation and sowing to weed management, plant protection, harvest, and post-harvest handling. On a normal day, you will build mechanisation plans, match implements to tractor power and field conditions, schedule machinery across sites, monitor machine utilization and maintenance, and train field teams and operators to ensure safe and efficient operations while collaborating closely with the supply chain and agronomy teams.
Responsibilities
- Build comprehensive mechanisation plans and operational sequences for each project site across the full crop cycle.
- Match implements correctly to available tractor power, field conditions, soil types, and moisture levels.
- Schedule machine and operator deployment across multiple sites to meet time-critical farming windows.
- Own preventive maintenance schedules, diagnose machinery breakdowns, and oversee repairs or local mechanics.
- Draft technical and functional specifications for new machines and evaluate supplier proposals on technical merit.
- Train REPs, operators, and field teams on correct equipment operation, calibration, and safety practices.
- Track machine utilization, fuel consumption, downtime, and output using company digital tools and ERP.
Requirements
- B.Tech or B.E. in Agricultural Engineering, Farm Machinery and Power, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
- 4-8 years of hands-on experience planning and running farm mechanisation across multiple sites or farmer clusters.
- Thorough working knowledge of various agricultural machinery, tractors, implements, and harvesting equipment.
- Practical repair and troubleshooting ability for engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and sprayer systems.
- Ability to competently operate a tractor and common implements to demonstrate correct usage in the field.
- Understanding of farm mechanisation economics including cost per acre, custom hiring rates, and depreciation.
- Comfort with spreadsheets, digital record-keeping, ERP systems, and field data tools.
Good to have
- Experience mechanising horticulture, plantation, or high-value field crops with adapted bed geometry.
- Exposure to precision agriculture such as drone spraying, GPS-guided operations, and telematics.
- Experience running or working with a custom hiring centre or farm machinery service operation.
- Experience with fabrication or modification of implements to suit local field conditions.
- Familiarity with government farm mechanisation schemes, subsidy norms, and technical documentation.
