People Systems Engineer

As a People Systems Engineer at GitLab in Bangalore, India, you will design, build, and maintain automations, integrations, and AI-powered workflows connecting tools like Workday, Greenhouse, and Slack. Working within the People Technology team, your day-to-day work involves writing clean automation code in Ruby, developing integrations using APIs and web services, troubleshooting integration health, and shipping changes through GitLab CI/CD pipelines. You will own features from initial request through testing, deployment, and ongoing reliability while incorporating AI tools like Claude into daily workflows to eliminate manual effort and streamline global workforce operations in an all-remote, async-first environment.

Responsibilities

• Build, test, and maintain People system automations and integrations across Workato, Google Cloud Platform, Claude, Workday, Greenhouse, and GitLab.
• Develop integrations between Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and internal tools using Workday Web Services and Slack APIs.
• Write clean automation code in Ruby or a comparable scripting language, utilizing GitLab for version control and peer code reviews.
• Monitor integration health, troubleshoot failures quickly, and ship safe changes through GitLab CI/CD pipelines following SOX ITGC standards.
• Lead with AI by using large language models, LLMs, and Claude every day to accelerate development and prototype AI agents.
• Partner with People Technology Analysts, Information Security, IT, and AI Engineering to build durable and scalable solutions.
• Raise the bar for how automations are architected, documented, and maintained alongside the team.

Requirements

• Hands-on experience building automations or integrations, ideally with human resources or business systems.
• Experience writing and maintaining code in Ruby or a comparable scripting language like Python or JavaScript.
• Hands-on experience with Workato or a comparable integration platform as a service in a production environment.
• Experience working with APIs and web services, including REST and SOAP.
• Proficiency with Git for version control and code review.
• An AI-forward mindset with experience using AI tools every day to automate tasks and speed up development.
• Ability to work independently, solve problems with curiosity, and protect highly confidential information.

Good to have

• Experience with Workday integrations, Workday Web Services, Reporting as a Service, or Workday Studio.
• Experience building Slack apps or bots.
• Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, Docker, or Kubernetes.
• Experience building with LLMs, AI agents, or MCP frameworks.
• Experience with SOX ITGC controls, Greenhouse, Serval, Google Workspace, or all-remote work.
