Fivetran and dbt Labs are building the data infrastructure layer that helps organizations move, transform, and trust their data. The Semantic Layer team owns the systems that turn dbt models into trusted, reusable business metrics using MetricFlow, an open-source semantic engine. As a Senior Software Engineer based in Bengaluru, you will be a core contributor to MetricFlow. A normal day in this role involves designing new features, optimizing query generation, hardening the open-source codebase, reviewing pull requests, managing releases, and partnering with the open-source community. You will write production code, drive technical decisions, and collaborate with engineers across the dbt ecosystem to ensure seamless integration and performance at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain core features of MetricFlow, including metric definitions, query compilation, and SQL generation.
• Own MetricFlow as an open-source project by triaging issues, reviewing pull requests, and managing releases.
• Collaborate with engineers across the dbt ecosystem to ensure seamless integration with other services.
• Improve performance, reliability, and observability of metric query execution at scale.
• Partner with product and developer-relations teams to translate community feedback into shipped improvements.
• Write clear technical documentation, RFCs, and design docs.
• Mentor other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.

Requirements

• Strong professional software engineering experience with a track record of shipping production systems.
• Deep proficiency in Python, including modern typing, testing practices, and packaging.
• Strong SQL fundamentals and understanding of how analytical query engines execute queries.
• Experience designing systems involving parsing, compilation, or transformation.
• Solid grasp of software design principles like clean APIs, modularity, testability, and backwards compatibility.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience collaborating in a distributed, asynchronous team environment.

Good to have

• Prior experience contributing to or maintaining a popular open-source project.
• Familiarity with dbt, MetricFlow, LookML, Cube, or other semantic-layer technologies.
• Background in data warehousing internals, query optimization, or analytical SQL dialects.
• Experience with CI/CD, GitHub Actions, and release engineering for Python libraries.
• Exposure to building developer-facing APIs, SDKs, or CLIs.
