As a Principal Software Engineer, Backend at Skylo in Bangalore, you will play a crucial role in eliminating coverage blind spots by helping develop standards-based satellite connectivity solutions. Skylo connects smartphones and IoT devices directly to satellites using a cloud-native platform that bridges terrestrial and satellite networks. Within the Platform and Cloud Services team, this senior, hands-on individual contributor role requires you to act as a technical authority. In a normal day, you will architect large-scale distributed systems, drive technical strategies, lead the implementation of complex features, and mentor engineers across all levels. You will work at the intersection of consumer devices, automotive, and industrial IoT, ensuring that Skylo's backend platform remains scalable, resilient, and built to the highest standards while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and architecture of complex, large-scale, and distributed backend systems.
• Define and steer the technical strategy for major components and product features.
• Own and lead the implementation of large-scale features from initial design to deployment.
• Drive a culture of high quality through rigorous code reviews and engineering best practices.
• Act as a technical advisor and mentor to senior, mid-level, and junior engineers.
• Implement and enforce security best practices and robust API test automation.
• Identify performance bottlenecks and optimize system scalability and reliability.

Requirements

• 16+ years of progressive experience in software engineering with a focus on backend development and distributed systems architecture.
• Proven track record of technical leadership, feature design ownership, and mentoring engineers.
• Extensive experience with microservices architecture, API design, scalable data stores, caching systems, and message queues.
• Deep proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Go, or Python.
• Solid understanding of cloud environments, containerization, orchestration, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong knowledge of automated testing frameworks and observability tools for monitoring and logging.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Good to have

• Telecommunications domain experience.
• Understanding of 3GPP specifications related to EPC and 5G Core.
• Active habits using AI tools daily to amplify output.
