As a Senior Software Engineer at Appian Corporation in Chennai, your mission is to ensure the Appian platform remains fast, scalable, and capable of handling complex customer tasks. In this role, you will focus on designing, developing, and maintaining complex software systems while incorporating AI tools and integration such as RAG and agentic workflows. A normal day involves building scalable software, providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members, setting code quality standards, creating internal tools for developer enablement, driving feature development from requirements to deployment, and collaborating with stakeholders to align technical choices with business goals.

Responsibilities

• Set and enforce coding standards across the repository for clean and maintainable code.
• Lead high-level design sessions and select architectural patterns like Microservices or Serverless.
• Create internal tooling and Golden Paths to simplify underlying infrastructure for feature teams.
• Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and support team growth.
• Drive feature development from requirement analysis through deployment.
• Debug production issues, optimize performance bottlenecks, and resolve logic problems.
• Collaborate across teams with stakeholders like Product Owners to drive feature development.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and design patterns in Java and web technology environments.
• Experience in building and scaling distributed systems in cloud-native environments.
• Experience identifying performance bottlenecks and optimizing large codebases.
• Experience in AI/ML adoptability and integrating intelligent features into workflows.
• Experience leading technical initiatives or small project groups.

Good to have

• Educational background from a premier engineering institution focused on Computer Science fundamentals.
• Experience with performance monitoring tools like Grafana and Prometheus.
• Experience with AWS cloud platforms and modern database technologies.
• Experience using AI tools and models like Amazon Q, Kiro, and Claude.
