As a Senior Software Engineer at Appian Corporation in Chennai, India, you will architect foundational systems and build high-performance platform services that power global software execution. Your normal day involves designing reusable platform services, creating modern developer tooling, conducting technical spikes, leading code reviews, and optimizing low-latency performance to eliminate engineering friction. You will work within the Platform Engineering, Foundations & Enablement team, which delivers resilient shared services and core frameworks to support Appian's growth in the AI-Powered Process Automation market. Responsibilities

• Architect and construct high-performance, resilient platform features, robust APIs, and shared frameworks.
• Execute technical spikes to clear architectural runways, ensuring system stability and modularity.
• Lead rigorous code reviews, drive proactive refactoring, and optimize low-latency performance.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers.
• Design automated workflows and self-service platform tools to maximize developer velocity.
• Author comprehensive design documents and system guides for multi-functional engineering teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience focusing on Platform Engineering, Enterprise Software Design, or Developer Enablement.
• Deep hands-on proficiency in core backend languages including Java, Python, or Go.
• Demonstrated background in Distributed Systems, Microservices, modular design, and high-throughput API Development.
• Robust troubleshooting and observability skills utilizing industry-standard Telemetry, Logging, and Monitoring tools.

Good to have

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or AWS CDK, along with modern CI/CD pipelines.
• Expertise with AWS Cloud Services, Docker, Kubernetes, or EKS.
• Exposure to GitOps workflows, Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs), or Cloud Cost Optimization strategies.
• Knowledge of enterprise security frameworks, including SOC2 or FedRAMP.
• Experience within enterprise ecosystems like Salesforce or ServiceNow.
