Within Coupang, the Intelligent Cloud Commerce team acts as the core backbone of the cloud business, designing next-generation cloud platforms that manage pricing, usage metering, billing, and revenue generation. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will serve as a technical leader helping to scale these event-driven systems. Your team builds financial-grade software capable of processing vast volumes of data, from customer usage to Kubernetes signals. A normal day in this role involves designing low-latency and high-throughput distributed systems, tackling multi-tenant cloud architecture challenges, ensuring revenue-critical correctness, and collaborating closely with product and infrastructure teams to deliver reliable, scalable cloud-native capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Design and construct scalable backend systems dedicated to pricing, usage metering, and billing.
• Develop event-driven architectures capable of processing massive amounts of infrastructure and real-time usage data.
• Create systems that deliver real-time visibility regarding customer usage and billing metrics.
• Build out components supporting rate cards, pricing plans, multi-currency transactions, and discounting.
• Engine distributed systems designed to handle exponential growth in customer volume and usage events.
• Partner with infrastructure, platform, and product teams to deliver cloud-native commerce tools.
• Guarantee high standards of scalability, reliability, and accuracy within revenue-critical workflows.
• Steer architecture decisions and champion engineering best practices.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Deep proficiency in Java backend development.
• Working experience with cloud platforms, with a preference for AWS.
• Background in developing distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
• Demonstrated experience designing and scaling high-throughput systems managing large event volumes.
• Familiarity with AWS-managed databases such as Aurora or comparable OLTP solutions.
• Understanding of containerized systems and Kubernetes ecosystems.
• Strong foundation in scalability, system design, and reliability concepts.

Good to have

• Experience using Golang for backend development.
• Deep technical expertise spanning the AWS ecosystem.
• Background building billing engines, cloud commerce platforms, or pricing systems.
• Exposure to high-growth environments scaling from early stages to massive production levels.
• Experience developing multi-tenant and customer-facing cloud infrastructure.
