As a Life Underwriter based in Bangalore, India, you will join a growing team at an insurtech startup that is modernizing how life insurance is bought, sold, and underwritten. In this full-time role, a normal day involves evaluating individual risk factors such as medical history, physical conditions, occupational hazards, and financial backgrounds to determine whether to accept, modify, or decline applications. You will review health documents, communicate your decisions clearly, and work collaboratively to gather necessary information. The position offers a chance to influence process improvements while maintaining expected mortality standards. You will operate independently with minimal direction, handling assigned requests comfortably within an ambiguous and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Understand and follow underwriting policies, guidelines, practices, and procedures
• Evaluate medical history, physical conditions, occupational hazards, and financial backgrounds to accept, modify, or decline risk
• Communicate underwriting decisions effectively through written and verbal channels
• Champion and influence process changes while maintaining mortality expectations
• Gather necessary information efficiently for accurate decision making
• Work independently on assigned requests with minimal direction

Requirements

• 3 to 5+ years of experience in medical Life or Health Underwriting
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical, non-medical, and financial risk selection aspects
• Strong critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills
• Positive, inclusive, agile, and collaborative mindset
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Experience underwriting both term and permanent life insurance products
• Comfortable working with ambiguity

Good to have

• US-based underwriting experience
• Experience assessing and summarizing Attending Physician Statements (APS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR)
• In-process or completed industry designations such as LOMA, ALMI, FMLI, ALU, or FALU
