In the Manager, Life Underwriting position based in Bangalore, India, you will lead and mentor a developing team while directly handling underwriting cases. Your normal day will combine hands-on case underwriting for half your time with leadership duties such as recruiting, hiring, and building training programs. You will also collaborate with senior leadership to assess headcount, improve workflows, integrate rules within an underwriting engine, and maintain quality control, helping Ethos redefine how life underwriting operates.

Responsibilities

• Spend half of your working time dedicated to case underwriting.
• Lead the underwriting team with positivity, passion, and a focus on continual improvement.
• Collaborate with senior leaders to recruit, hire, mentor, and develop domestic and international staff.
• Assess team quality, handle headcount needs, and perform hiring analysis for company growth.
• Create and enhance onboarding programs and underwriting training modules.
• Build performance management and quality control frameworks to deliver team feedback and reviews.
• Optimize underwriting workflows, recommend best practices, and help implement engine rules.
• Perform quality assurance testing on automated rules in coordination with Underwriting Strategies.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in Life underwriting.
• 5+ years of experience in an underwriting leadership or development role.
• Extensive knowledge of life insurance trends and new technology.
• Strong execution focus and owner mentality with a track record of timely success.
• Data-oriented decision-making skills combined with strong intuition.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and leadership abilities.

Good to have

• US-based underwriting experience.
• Underwriting certifications such as LOMA or ALU.
