Staff Engineer, Payments

Stripe, a financial infrastructure platform helping millions of businesses accept payments and grow revenue, is hiring a Staff Engineer for its Payments team in Bengaluru. The team forms the core of Stripe's mission to increase the internet's GDP, focusing on expanding the payments footprint in India. In this role, you will set the technical direction for next-generation payment offerings in the market. A normal day involves building on foundational platforms, leading the architectural evolution of critical systems that process money movement, integrating with local payment rails, and routing payments reliably. You will tackle complex technical challenges such as low-latency execution, transactional correctness, zero-downtime migrations, and distributed-state management while collaborating with global engineering and cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate secure, reliable, and extensible production systems.
• Drive complex initiatives from concept to launch by managing dependencies and making architectural trade-offs.
• Set a high technical bar through hands-on coding, design reviews, testing, documentation, and maintainable design.
• Partner with cross-functional and external partners to navigate regulatory complexity and deliver roadmaps.
• Own operational excellence by leading incident response and improving system health and workflows.
• Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes.
• Mentor and develop engineers to cultivate future leaders at Stripe.

Requirements

• 10+ years of hands-on experience building and operating highly available, fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Proven experience driving architectural vision for complex, multi-team initiatives with deep expertise in system design, databases, and API development.
• Strong track record of end-to-end technical ownership, steering projects from concept to delivery.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Collaborative mindset that values diverse perspectives across organizational boundaries.
• Deep user empathy with a customer-centric lens to problem-solving and product development.

Good to have

• Experience in the payments or financial technology industry.
• Experience leading projects across multiple cross-functional teams and timezones.
• Proficiency in Ruby, Java, or Go.
• Experience working with relational and document databases.
